European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
