The US central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
