Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in September and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the judge's ruling was the chance of Bolsonaro's move to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a history of organizing to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The legal document highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on the following day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that he be allowed to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
