The United Kingdom and the United States have agreed to a important bilateral deal that will keep zero duties on UK pharmaceutical shipments being sold in the US market.

Agreement Details of the Deal

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to boost funding on drugs through the NHS. This pledge ensures that tariffs on these crucial goods will remain at zero for a duration of 36 months.

This deal comes after recent threats to hike tariffs on patented pharmaceutical imports, with potential rates discussed up to 100%.

"This arrangement between the Britain strengthens the global environment for new treatments and brings long-overdue fairness to American-British drug exports," a release said.

Economic Impact

Pharmaceuticals constitute one of the the United Kingdom's largest exports to the US, which is easily the largest market for major companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Statistics indicate that in the year leading up to September, the UK shipped pharmaceutical products valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This figure accounted for 17.4% of total UK exports in that period.

"This deal safeguards employment, increases funding and sets the stage for the UK to become a international leader for biotech and pharma," a government official stated.

Specific British Pledges

The agreement includes several specific pledges from the UK:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will raise the affordability limit at which it considers new therapies to be unaffordable by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a aim to raise total public funding on drugs from 0.3% of GDP to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Payback Limit: The percentage drug companies must refund to the NHS to control costs will be limited at 15%. Previously, repayments topped 20%.

Recent Tensions

The pact comes amid a long-running row between the pharmaceutical industry and the British authorities over medicine costs and NHS adoption.

The disagreement were exacerbated by assertions that American customers were charged a premium for the identical medicines than people in the UK and Europe.

Over the last 18 months, several large manufacturing plans in the UK have been delayed or cancelled, while major funding commitments have been announced toward American operations.

The Science Minister stated that the NHS had to spend more on medicines, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a proportion of its total funding over the past decade.
